Uber den Künstler

Victor Khlebnikov (known as Velimir) was born on October 28th, 1885, in the area of the Lower Volga. He originated from Russian nobility because of his mother's family relations. After receiving a good education at home, he attended a proper school. Here Khlebnikov discovered a passion for mathematics. He entered the Kazan University on mathematics in 1903. After being arrested for taking part in a student demonstration, Khlebnikov left the University, before enrolling again in the field of biology.

His passion for literature led him to Petersburg in 1908, where he took the Slavonic name Velmir as a pseudonym. In Petersburg he found himself under the influence of Symbolism, but he soon descovered his view on poetry was different and he drew closer to a group of young poets and artists dreaming of changes in art. His main interest went out to the archaic world in relation to nature and civilization. Around this time Khlebnikov can be called a true Futurist, because of his ideas about prediction: he believed all battles in human history took place in strict periodicity and order. After the Revolution Khlebnikov became known as a traveller, before a lack of a true home affected his health. In 1922 he settled down again, but passed away in June the same year.
