Paul Gaugin (1848-1903) was a French painter who was born in Paris. He became a sailor and joined a stockbroking firm in 1871. He abandoned the stock market in 1883 and began painting with his friends Pissarro and Cézanne. He settled in Brittany in 1886 and in 1891 he emigrated to Tahiti in the South Seas. In 1901 he moved to the Marquesas, where he died. When he parted from the Impressionists in 1887, he began to develop a decorative style employing drawing, and flat, pure colors. His outlines were often intensified by black lines. In his work he was inspired by the brilliant colors of Tahiti and primitive sculpture. Gaugin’s paintings were an important source of inspiration to later non-representational art.
