Koekkoek was a Dutch drawftsman and painter of animals and especially birds, born and deceased in Amsterdam. Koekkoek came from a family of painters: his grandfather was Johannes Hermanus Koekkoek (1778-1851), his father was Willem Koekkoek (1839-1895) and his brother was Hermanus Willem Koekkoek (1867-1929).

Renowned works of Koekkoeks hand include the watercolours in two series of prints. The prints were used in numerous schools during the time, as an illustration for the subject of "Knowledge of nature", or Biology. After this, Koekkoek made a second series of watercolours, depicting a number of Dutch places, such as the Naardermeer and the Northsea. From 1918 Koekkoek worked as a scientific illustrator for the National Museum of Natural History in Leiden, Holland, where he spend a period of twenty years.

Koekoeks personal interest was focussed on Impressionist landscapes, adorned with birds and poultry.
