Thomas Malby Sr. started map and global making around 1839. Tomas Malby Jr. carried on his father’s company under the name of Malby & Son. Many globes were engraved by C. Malby. The Malby firm is among others famous for its terrestrial globe - a reissue of John Addison’s globe of 1825 - for the Great Exhibition (London, 1851),. Malby produced globes of very different sizes (from pocket to table globes). The depiction of lines of magnetic variation on a globe was an important innovation of the largest globe (45,5 cm. diameter) engraved by Malby (London,1848). The company associated itself with SDUK (the Society of Diffusion of Useful Knowledge). From about 1862 Malby globes, that were produced for SDUK, were published by Edward Stanford. Malby also cooperated with map and globe maker James Wyld.
