Born in 1607, from the young age of 12 on, he was active as an artist, quickly becoming famous for his talent at his age. This attracted the attention of Maurice van Nassau, Prince of Orange, who around 1620 bought a painting of Lievens. Lievens collaborated and shared a studio with Rembrandt from 1621 to 1631, but their competitive collaboration caused them to split. Rembrandt then moved to Amsterdam and Lievens to England, where he was invited to the British court. Later he settled in Antwerp.
