Comme des Garçons was founded in Tokyo in 1969 and means 'like boys' in French. It was featured at the Paris Fashion Week for the first time in 1981. Originally, Comme des Garcons was as a side project for Japanese designer Rei Kawakubo. Comme des Garçons is currently a large fashion company that estimated to be worth 180 million dollars.

Their early designs included diverse and sometimes odd pieces with for instance three armed jackets and face-covering turtlenecks. The recent collections tend to be relatively more mainstream. In 1984, designer Junya Watanabe joined the company after graduating from a fashion college in Tokyo. The first show of Comme des Garcons in the US debuted in 1985.
In 1987, Watanabe started designing under the Commes des Garcons fashion label called Tricot. He would launch his own fashion label 5 years later. In 1993, Comme des Garçons moved from Tokyo to Paris. They currently have stores in Paris, New York, Tokyo, Hong, Kong, Beijing, Bangkok and numerous other large cities.
