Adriaen Brouwer, also spelled Adriaan Brauwer, was a Flemish genre painter and draughtsman, born in 1605/1606 in Oudenaarde, Flanders (Belgium). He died in Antwerp on 1 February 1638. Brouwer was probably an apprentice pupil of Frans Hals in Haarlem about 162. He gained a high reputation in Holland and returned to the South Netherlands in 1631. There he was put in prison by the Spaniards until September 1633. Thereafter he moved to Antwerp. He painted subjects drawn from common life, like smoking or drinking peasants and surgeons operating patients. Many pictures are small and painted on panel. His vulgar subjects contrast with the delicacy of his style.
